These configuration instructions will guide you through configuring Macintosh OS 8/9 to connect to SpiritOne using a modem. These instructions do not include setting up email software for use with SpiritOne. Instructions on configuring your email software for use with SpiritOne can be found here.

  1. Locate the Internet Setup Assistant program on your computer. This is typically located in the "Client Access" folder in the "Internet Utilities" folder in the "Internet" folder on your hard disk. You can also start it by double-clicking on its alias in the "Assistants" folder located on your hard disk.

  3. To launch the Setup Assistant, double-click on its icon.

  5. Click on the Update button to add a new configuration. The Internet Setup Assistant will display a screen of introductory information.

  7. Click on the right-arrow button in the lower-right corner of the dialog box. The assistant will prompt you to select the type of configuration activity you wish to perform. Select Add Internet Configuration as shown below:

  9. Click on the right-arrow button to proceed. The assistant will prompt you to enter a name for this configuration. In the example, below, the name "SpiritOne" has been entered:

  11. Click on the right-arrow to proceed. You will be prompted to select the type of modem you will be using with the configuration. Select your modem from the list, the port to which it is connected to your computer (typically the modem port), and either tone or pulse dialing (tone is best).

    If your modem does not appear in the list, try selecting "Hayes Acura 288" or "Supra 288" as alternatives.

  13. Click on the right-arrow to proceed. The assistant will ask you to enter the telephone number you will be calling and your account name and password. Enter the local dial-up number from the sidebar to the right.

    If you are in an area that requires 10-digit dialing, place the area code before the dial-up number in the Phone Number field. Do not enter a 1.

  14. Enter your entire SpiritOne or Aracnet email address in all lower-case letters in the box asking for your Account Name.

  16. Click on the right-arrow to proceed. You will be asked whether or not you have been assigned an IP address for your account. Click on the No button:

  18. Click on the right-arrow to proceed. The assistant will prompt you to enter Domain Name Server (DNS) information for SpiritOne. Type this information exactly as shown below:

  20. Click on the right-arrow to proceed. You will be asked to enter your electronic mail address information. Enter your email address in the first of the two lower fields. You will also want to enter your SpiritOne password below your email address.

  22. Click on the right-arrow to proceed. The assistant prompts for the location of your email (the POP3 server) from which you receive electronic mail and the (SMTP) server which sends your email. So, in the first field enter your username, followed by an @, then the mail server from the sidebar to the left. In the second field enter just the mail server.

  24. Click on the right-arrow to proceed. You will be asked to enter the name of the news server. Get this information from the sidebar to the left.
  25. Sometimes the assistant asks for a "quoting" character. If you see this question on your screen, we recommend you select a "greater than" sign like this: ">"

  27. Click on the right-arrow to proceed. Then click on the Go Ahead button to save your configuration and exit Internet Setup Assistant:
