Uploading files with WS_FTP

These are the instructions for using WS_ftp to upload your web pages to your web space on SpiritOne. These instructions assume that you have already downloaded and installed the Coreftp program. If you do not yet have WS_ftp installed, you may download the installer from a shareware site such as Tucows or Download.com.

  1. Open the WS_FTP program.
  2. Click on the Connect button at the bottom of the window.
  3. Select your SpiritOne profile. If you are setting up your profile for the first time:
    • Next to Profile Name:, enter a description for the profile, for instance, SpiritOne.
    • Next to Host Name/Address:, enter the appropriate FTP server from the sidebar on the left.
    • Next to Host Type:, select Automatic detect.
    • Next to User ID:, enter your SpiritOne login name.
    • Next to Password:, enter your SpiritOne password. If you like, you can check the Save Pwd box to have WS_FTP remember your password for this profile.
  4. Click on the Startup tab.
  5. Enter public_html in the Initial Remote Site Folder field
  6. Click OK.
  7. Your screen will now be split into two parts. The right window pane will be the remote directory, the directory which is on our server. The left window pane is the local directory, the directory that is on your computer.
  8. You should already be in your public_html directory. However, if you're a directory too high, just double-click on "public_html" on the right. This is the directory on our server where you will need to upload your web files and/or folders.
  9. On the left side, at the top of the list of files you should see an arrow pointing up with ".." next to it. You can double-click here to move one level up in your local directories. Use this to browse to the directory on your hard drive where your web pages reside.
  10. Once you have browsed to the directory that contains your web files, double-click on it to view the contents.
  11. In between the two window panes, there are two arrows which you can click to transfer files between the local and remote computers. To upload a file or folder from your computer to your web space on SpiritOne's server:
    • Highlight the file or folder name in the left window pane.
    • Click the right arrow.
    • The file or folder will appear in the right-hand window pane once it has been uploaded to your web space.
  12. Here are some other useful things you can do with WS_FTP to manage your web files and folders:
    • To rename a file on the remote computer, highlight it in the right-hand window pane, then click the Rename button to the right.
    • To delete a file on the remote computer, highlight it in the right-hand window pane, then click the Delete button to the right.
    • To create a new directory on the remote computer, click the MkDir button on the right-hand side of the screen. Type a name for the new directory, then click OK.
  13. When you are done, click the Close button at the bottom of the window.
  14. The address of your web site will be:

    http://www.SpiritOne.com/~accountname
    or,
    http://www.aracnet.com/~accountname

  15. Replace the word "accountname" with your own SpiritOne login name.
  16. REMEMBER: your main page must be named index.html or index.htm for our web server to find it.
